Far Horizons Award for Poetry
2008 Winner
The Malahat Review congratulates Tadzio Richards, of Calgary, whose poem, "Travels in Beringia" has won our Far Horizons Award for Poetry.
Tadzio’s entry was selected from 523 submitted poems by our final judge, Patricia Young, of Victoria. She praises his winning poem for being “haunting and mythical and yet grounded in the real world.”

“Travels in Beringia” appeared in our fall issue, #164, which came out at the end of September. Tadzio received $500 in prize money, plus $40 per printed page.
Tadzio Richards has worked in the Arctic and other locations as an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker. He currently divides his time between Calgary and northwestern B.C. A graduate of UBC’s optional-residency MFA program, he also recently won Gold and Silver at the 2007 National Magazine Awards. We extend our thanks to everyone who entered this year’s Far Horizons contest.
The Malahat Review’s Far Horizons Award for Poetry runs every other year, alternating with our Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction. The deadline for the latter is May 1, 2009 (postmark date). For more information, check out the 2009 Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction guidelines.
