This Side of West Launch

178 Cover This Side of West Cover

On May 15th, we held a joint launch of this year's issue of This Side of West, the annual undergraduate literary journal of the Writing Students' Union at the University of Victoria and our Spring 2012 issue (#178).

This Side of West took the stage first, with lead creative nonfiction editor Megan Gartrell and lead fiction editor Cody Klippenstein introducing student readers Amanda Merritt, Simone Littledale, Charlotte Helston, and Chelsea Thompson. Erin Frances Fisher

Next, our editor John Barton introduced the Malahat readers. Erin Frances Fisher read from her 2012 Open Season Award for Fiction-winning story, "Apiculture," Madeline Sonik read from her creative nonfiction piece, "Shriek," Karen Enns read her poems "Getting the Chimney Repaired" and "Talking to the Artist at the Show," and Patrick Friesen read from his new work, including his 2012 P. K. Page Founders' Award for Poetry-winning poem, "storm windows" (published in our Spring, 2011 issue #174)

All Friends of The Malahat in attendance to to choose a free book of new Canadian fiction, poetry, or nonfiction to take home with them.
