Donald Winkler is a Montreal-based literary translator and documentary filmmaker. His films include a series of documentaries on the first generation of Canadian modernist poets (Poets: A Sestet); Ode to a Requiem, on Mozart’s Requiem; Thank You for the Love You Gave, on playwright Tomson Highway; Moshe Safdie: The Power of Architecture; and most recently, Margaret & Evergon, on photographer Evergon’s relationship to his mother and model, Margaret Lunt. Winkler is a translator of nonfiction, fiction and poetry, has been a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for translation five times, and has received the award on three occasions, most recently in 2013 for his rendering of Pierre Nepveu’s collection of poetry, The Major Verbs (Les Verbes majeurs).
